In this session, Gabe Petek, the State of California’s Legislative Analyst, will discuss California’s fiscal situation. Whereas the Legislative Analyst’s Office and Department of Finance have previously estimated that the state faces a significant budget deficit in the 2024-25 budget year, the picture will change due to updates included in the May Revision, tax receipts in April, and potential early action that the Legislature may take between now and then to begin addressing the problem.

Petek will catch us up as to what the latest developments indicate about California’s budget outlook. He will also offer an assessment of the May Revision, including any notable differences his office may have with the Newsom Administration’s underlying fiscal assumptions.

Gabriel Petek was appointed to the position of the Legislative Analyst in February 2019, as the sixth person to serve in that capacity since the office was founded in 1941. As the Legislative Analyst, Gabriel serves as the nonpartisan fiscal advisor to both houses of the California Legislature and oversees the preparation of fiscal and policy analyses of the state’s budget and programs. His office is also responsible for preparing impartial analyses of all initiatives and constitutional measures qualifying for the state’s ballot.
